The Style Council

Oh what I would have given for this (or ’Walls Come Tumbling Down’) to have charted instead of ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead.’ Because as much as I support its right to be there (and that support grows every time the Daily Mail speaks on the matter) it is not exactly tasteful, whatever way you look at it. But a Style Council song (or Billy Bragg and the Specials etc) would have been perfect because it would have served as a protest against celebrating Margaret Thatcher’s legacy, rather than rejoicing in someone’s death. I’d argue that the Margaret Thatcher who inspired so much hatred died in 1990, along with her premiership. The death of an 85 year old woman with dementia isn’t the thing to be focusing on here; the death of her legacy is. But perhaps the shock value is what makes chart-jacking songs so effective…
